Personal Style of Classroom Management
My classroom management style will reflect the type of classroom I want to create. There are five main characteristics that will be displayed by the classroom management I choose to use in my classroom based off of my personality style. Each of these characteristics will contribute to that successful environment where every child will feel successful, knowledgeable, and loved that I wish to create through my classroom management. Using the Wong's, Marzano's, and Albert's methods and theories, I have come to find these characteristics to contribute to the effectiveness of my classroom management plan.
1. Organized
- "Organization is the key to effectiveness" (Wong & Wong, 2009, p. 92).
- According to Wong and Wong (2009), being organized is part of modeling readiness to students (p. 92).
- I am a very organized person. I find that clutter clutters the mind and that files, shelves, and cleanliness result in a calmer environment.
- I plan to use this personality trait to not only teach my students how to be organized individuals, but also to create less clutter and distractions in my classroom.
- Wong and Wong say (2009), "Nothing will send kids into orbit faster than letting them suspect that the teacher is disorganized" (p. 82).
2. Nurturing
- According to Charels and Senter (2005),"To raise student confidence, teachers should convey to students that learning is a process of improvement, not an end product" (p. 205).
- I tend to only want to see and contribute to what is best for people. The same will take place in my classroom. I will nurture each student's learning by believing in their highest potential and teaching them to believe in their highest potential.
- Nurturing does not mean babysitting. I will guide my students to responsibility. I want what is best for them, and learning how to regulate their own learning and behaviors is truly what is best for them.
3. Consistent
- Wong and Wong state (2009), "Power comes when you make life predictable for people" - Howard Stevenson (p. 195).
- I believe that consistency creates comfort.
- By showing students how consistent I am by reinforcing procedures and rules, I hope to teach them to participate in that consistency in order to be able to do procedures naturally. This will make the classroom function smoothly.
4. Enthusiastic
- "... for the chief force in teaching is confidence and enthusiasm" - Joyce Cary (Cary, 2012).
- I believe that Marzano makes a great point when he address the effectiveness of "Mental Set" (Marzano, 2001).
- Part of my mental set will include my enthusiasm for learning and teaching and using that to instill and enthusiasm for learning in my students.
5. Relational
- Charels and Senter state (2005),"The effectiveness of Cooperative Discipline is increased when supported by students and parents" (p. 210).
- I plan to use my relational skills through collaborating with teachers and students. I hope to involve the parents of my students throughout the entire year through newsletters, e-mail updates, involvement of the composition of the Classroom Promise and volunteering within the classroom and field trips.
- I also plan to use my relational skills to build relationship with all of my colleagues and administration in the school by forming positive and uplifting relationships through sharing and taking ideas to better my management style.
