"Clear rules promote consistency
in the classroom."
- Harry & Rosemary Wong
(Wong & Wong, 2009, p. 149)
There are four specific rules that will be required of my students. I chose five rules due to the point that Harry and Rosemary Wong make that most people can only remember four to five rules at once (Wong & Wong, 2009, pg. 150). I believe that setting at least a few rules in the classrooms reminds that students that I hold authority in my classroom without being over-powering or not allowing them to share their thoughts and ideas. It shows that there are limits in the classroom that can not be broken. (Wong & Wong, 2009, pg. 150). Rewards and consequences will be used in my rule plan as well, including certain aspects of the Nurtured Heart Approach by Howard Glasser. The rules of my classroom will be decided by myself (the teacher) as opposed to the norms of the classroom being decided by the students. This shows that I hold authority of my classroom and that I expect these rules to be followed for success in my classroom.
Miss Gascho's Classroom Rules
1. Be polite and helpful to all
2. Hands, feet, and objects to yourselves at all times
3. Stay in your seat & wait for directions
4. Eyes, ears, and quiet mouths on the teacher or speaker
5. Follow directions quietly
Consequences
Group misbehavior:
If the class as a whole or a certain group of students do not perform directions as told or are breaking any of the above rules, the teacher will say "Class Reset" (Nurtured Heart Approach, Glasser)
- The students will return to their seats or place their heads down on their tables until the class is once again silent.
- The teacher will have the students re-try using the rules posted at the front of the board.
Individual misbehavior:
If a student decide to make poor choices in their learning and break any of these rules they will:
- First, be given either a Pregnant Pause or a STOP sign on their desk before going to the Breath Box.
- The next step, if the student's misbehavior continues will be an Action Plan (Wong & Wong, 2009, p.158, 159).
- For this action plan the student will fill out the sheet and return to the teacher at an appropriate time. (Before recess, after dismissal from the school day if appropriate for travel means, or at a set conference time) The teacher and the student will discuss the problem and possible solutions to the problem.
- If the behavior continues, the student will be sent to higher authority at the office.
