Routines, Procedures, Norms, & Rules
My theory of the difference between classroom management and discipline comes from the theory of Harry K. Wong (2009). Procedures will be used to teach students how and why things will be done in my classroom. Five rules will be used in my classroom to monitor and explain classroom behavior expectations. I will be setting up routines and procedures in my classroom to make the time in my classroom focused on learning and not on disciplining. There will be minimal rules in order for my students to be involved and in control of their own learning, but to show that I hold authority. With the rules in place in my classroom I will use the theory of Howard Glasser and his Nurtured Heart Approach to build consequences for the breaking of any of these rules. I will also be using tangible rewards for students showing excellence in norms and rules in my classroom.
Overall, I want the routines, procedures, norms, and rules in my classroom to create an environment where my students feel in control, comfortable, consistently prepared, and organized.
